Quick answer
A government MBBS doctor in Nepal is appointed as a medical officer at the eighth level, on a starting basic salary of Rs 53,611 a month from Shrawan 2083, or about Rs 63,972 with allowances. Specialists enter at a higher level, the ninth starting at Rs 57,659. In private hospitals the profession’s agreed minimum for a medical officer was Rs 48,737 in 2023, and reported pay runs from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000.
A doctor’s salary in Nepal is two different questions. In government service it is a published scale by level. In private hospitals it is negotiated, with a floor agreed by the hospitals’ and doctors’ associations rather than set by law. This page gives the official government figures for 2083 and the sourced figures that exist for the private sector.

MBBS doctor and medical officer salary (8th level)
Provincial and federal Public Service Commission notices advertise the medical officer post in the Health Service, General Health Services group, at the eighth level. The starting basic salary is Rs 53,611. The 10% incentive allowance adds Rs 5,361 and the dearness allowance Rs 5,000, so the first month comes to about Rs 63,972 before provident fund and tax. Grades raise the basic salary to Rs 60,759.
Doctors posted to remote districts, and those doing emergency and on-call duty, receive further allowances that are not in these figures. Many government doctors also see patients privately outside office hours, which the scale does not reflect.
MD and specialist doctor salary
A doctor with an MD or MS is normally recruited as a consultant above the medical officer level. The ninth level starts at Rs 57,659 basic (about Rs 68,425 with allowances), the tenth at Rs 62,466 and the eleventh at Rs 66,539. We confirmed the eighth level for medical officers from a commission notice; the ninth level for consultants is the usual entry point but we did not find the notice to cite.
Private hospital doctor salary in Nepal
- The agreed floor. In May 2023 the Association of Private Health Institutions of Nepal and the Nepal Medical Association set a minimum of Rs 48,737 a month for a medical officer, up from Rs 42,000 in 2021 (Health News Nepal). It matched the government eighth-level start of the time. It is an agreement between associations, not a law, and we found no later revision.
- What is reported now. Nepal Health Press reported in May 2026 that private hospitals pay MBBS medical officers Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 a month.
- Duty-based pay. Some hospitals pay per 24-hour duty; a 2020 report put that at Rs 3,500 to Rs 6,000.
- Consultants. Specialists in private practice are usually paid a share of consultation and procedure fees, not a salary. No reliable published figure exists, so none is given here.
How many doctors are there in Nepal?
The Nepal Medical Council’s register, as given in the Economic Survey 2081/82 for Falgun 2081 (early 2025), listed 32,247 medical doctors, 5,347 dental surgeons, 11,616 specialists and 395 foreign doctors. Specialists are also counted among medical doctors, so the categories should not be added together.
From MBBS to a doctor’s salary
- 1Complete MBBS — five and a half years including the internship. The MBBS in Nepal guide covers the entrance examination, seats and fees.
- 2Pass the Nepal Medical Council licensing examination and register. No hospital can employ you as a doctor without it.
- 3Apply for medical officer posts through the Public Service Commission or a provincial commission, or directly to private and teaching hospitals.
- 4Specialise. An MD or MS moves you to consultant level in government service and to fee-based income in private practice.
