Money moves between relatives, neighbours and colleagues here constantly, and most of it moves on a spoken promise. What is missing when it goes wrong is never goodwill — it is a piece of paper saying how much, at what interest, and by when.
What a तमसुक has to say
Four things decide whether a loan paper is worth anything later: the amount in both figures and words, the interest rate, the date the money is due back, and the signatures of two witnesses. A note missing any one of them is an argument waiting to happen.
Write the amount in words as well as figures. A figure alone can be altered with a pen; words cannot. This is why every bank cheque does the same thing.
Interest, and how to state it
Quote the rate per year even when repayment is monthly. That is how a rate is quoted in Nepal, and stating a monthly figure next to a yearly assumption is the single most common cause of a dispute over what was actually agreed.
An interest-free loan between family is perfectly normal — leave the rate blank and the document says so plainly, which is better than silence.
Why witnesses matter more than you think
Two witnesses are what turns a private note into something that holds up. They are not a formality: their names, addresses and signatures are what a court looks at when the two parties disagree about what was signed.
Choose people who are not related to either side, and who can be found later.
Nepali or English
A तमसुक between two people in Nepal is normally written in Nepali, and this defaults to that. Switch it to English if the loan is with a company or is going to be read abroad — the layout, fields and clauses stay the same either way.
