Quick answer
In Kartik 2083 the 20 commercial banks priced loans at their base rate, 3.96% to 5.60%, plus a premium: a floating home loan cost 4.51% to 9.84%, 5.43–7.65% on average. A normal savings account paid 2.75–2.80% before 6% tax, a one-year FD 2.75–3.20%. NRB's average base rate was 4.70%.
Every commercial bank's interest rates in one place, from each bank's own rate sheet: the base rate its loans are priced on, its savings rates, and its home, personal, auto, education, gold and share loan rates, dated and linked. Then how a loan rate is set and why it changes every month, what the rates cost in EMI, the spread, how to compare and switch banks, and the Nepal Rastra Bank rules that protect a borrower.

Bank interest rates in Nepal, Kartik 2083: all 20 commercial banks
Each commercial bank publishes its rates for the coming Nepali month, most on the last day of the month before. These are the rates in force from 1 Kartik 2083 (18 Oct 2026), read on each bank's own rate sheet on 5 November 2026 (19 of 20; Prime's site would not show its sheet, so its row is from bankbyaj, a rate-listing site).
A loan's rate is the bank's base rate plus a premium. The base rate below is the one loans are priced on, usually the average of the last three months. Across the 20 banks it ran from 3.96% to 5.60%; a normal savings account paid 2.75–2.80%, and a floating-rate home loan cost from 4.51% to 9.84%, depending on the bank and the premium it sets for you.

How a bank sets your loan rate: base rate plus premium
Your rate = the bank's base rate + your premium. Nabil's sheet, for example, prices a housing loan at its base rate, 4.41%, plus 0.50% to 2.50%: 4.91–6.91%. Nepal Bank prices every home loan at its base rate, 4.38%, plus 2.42%: 6.80%.
Where in the range you land is the bank's choice. Citizens and Machhapuchchhre say on their sheets that each borrower's premium depends on the loan type, its term and the bank's own credit risk grading; Himalayan prices "Premier" customers lower than "Standard" ones. NRB says the rates on two loans of the same kind may differ by at most 2 points (a 2023 circular, cited on Citizens' and Himalayan's sheets).
A fixed rate is quoted all-in, for a set number of years. A floating rate moves with the base rate; the premium stays as agreed.
- 1Find the bank's base rate: on its rate sheet or its base-rate page, as the average of the last three months.
- 2Find the premium for your loan on the same sheet, or in your offer letter.
- 3Add them: that is your yearly rate this month.
- 4Divide by 12 for the monthly rate the bank charges on what you still owe.
Base rate of Nepalese banks
The base rate is the lowest rate a bank may lend at. It is worked out every month from what the bank pays for its deposits and borrowing, the cost of the cash and government securities Nepal Rastra Bank makes it hold, and its running costs. Every floating loan is the base rate plus a premium.
NRB's average base rate for commercial banks was 4.70% in mid-September 2026, down from 5.72% a year earlier. The base rates loans were priced on in Kartik 2083 ran from 3.96% (Rastriya Banijya Bank and Standard Chartered Bank Nepal) to 5.60% (NIC Asia Bank); their average, 4.71%, is close to NRB's.

Why your loan rate changes every month
Banks reprice floating loans every month on the average of their base rate over the last three months. Nabil's and Prabhu's sheets say so outright; NRB's 2023 circular, as Merolagani reported it, set the rule and said a bank may cut a rate faster than that average falls but may not raise it faster than it rises.
It is why rates fell. ADBL's three-month average base rate, the one its loans were priced on, was 10.45% for Ashoj 2080 and 4.59% for Ashwin 2083. On a Rs 50 lakh loan over 20 years at base rate + 2%, that is Rs 56,631 a month then and Rs 37,544 now, Rs 19,087 less.
If rates rise again, a floating loan's EMI rises with them, or the bank lengthens the term. A fixed rate does not move until its term ends.
Home loan interest rates of all banks in Nepal
19 banks publish a floating home loan rate. Its floor ran from 4.51% to 6.80% and its ceiling up to 9.84%; the average range was 5.43–7.65%. 5 banks (ADBL, Citizens, NIMB, Prime and Siddhartha) publish "up to" a premium, so their published floor is the base rate itself; the premium you are offered decides where you land.
Rs 50 lakh over 20 years costs Rs 31,659 a month at the lowest floor, 4.51%; Rs 37,404 a month at the average of the 19 banks' ranges, 6.54%; Rs 47,722 a month at the highest ceiling, 9.84%. Over the whole loan the gap between the lowest and highest is Rs 38,55,068.
Fixed rates hold for the term printed beside them, often 5 to 10 years, and then turn floating: NMB's note puts the premium after its fixed term at 2.99%, and Standard Chartered's offer at base rate + 1.5% after seven years.

Saving account interest rates of all banks
16 of the 20 banks pay 2.75% on a normal savings account; the rest pay 2.76% and 2.80%. The best-paying savings products, 3.75–4.76%, are mostly for money sent from abroad, and need proof of remittance.
Interest is worked out on the daily balance and credited each quarter at most banks (Laxmi Sunrise, Himalayan and Machhapuchchhre say so on their sheets), and the bank keeps back 6% as tax. Rs 1,00,000 kept in a normal account for a year at 2.75% earns Rs 2,777, of which Rs 167 is withheld: you keep Rs 2,610. At 4.76% you keep Rs 4,550.

Loan interest per month, and the EMI
Banks quote yearly rates. The monthly rate is the yearly rate ÷ 12: 6.54% a year is 0.545% a month, charged on what you still owe. The EMI (equated monthly instalment) is the fixed monthly payment that clears the loan, interest first: early EMIs are mostly interest, late ones mostly principal.
The table gives the EMI for every Rs 1 lakh borrowed. Multiply by the lakhs you borrow: Rs 25 lakh is 25 times the figure.
| Rate a year | 5 years | 10 years | 20 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | Rs 1,887 | Rs 1,061 | Rs 660 |
| 6% | Rs 1,933 | Rs 1,110 | Rs 716 |
| 7% | Rs 1,980 | Rs 1,161 | Rs 775 |
| 8% | Rs 2,028 | Rs 1,213 | Rs 836 |
| 9% | Rs 2,076 | Rs 1,267 | Rs 900 |
| 10% | Rs 2,125 | Rs 1,322 | Rs 965 |
The interest rate spread
The spread is the gap between the average rate a bank lends at and the average it pays depositors. In mid-September 2026, NRB's averages for commercial banks were 6.38% on loans and 3.11% on deposits, a gap of 3.27 points.
NRB caps it. The cap for commercial banks was cut to 4% in November 2022, as The Himalayan Times reported; a newer figure was not found, so treat 4% as the last one reported. The 10 banks that print their own spread showed 2.96–3.68%.
| Bank | Spread | Month |
|---|---|---|
| Everest Bank | 2.96% | Ashwin 2083 |
| Kumari Bank | 3.13% | Bhadra 2083 |
| Laxmi Sunrise Bank | 3.15% | Ashwin 2083 |
| Machhapuchchhre Bank | 3.41% | Ashoj 2083 |
| Nabil Bank | 3.17% | Ashwin 2083 |
| Nepal SBI Bank | 3.27% | Bhadra 2083 |
| Prabhu Bank | 3.19% | Ashwin 2083 |
| Rastriya Banijya Bank | 3.35% | Ashwin 2083 |

How to compare banks for a loan
- The rate you will be offered, not the floor. Ask for your premium in writing: Nabil's housing range of 0.50% to 2.50% over its base rate can mean either end.
- Floating or fixed, and what happens when a fixed term ends.
- The base rate's direction: a bank whose base rate is falling cuts its floating loans each month.
- Fees: the service fee on approval, valuation, renewal, and the cost of paying early or switching, from the bank's schedule of charges.
- Penal interest: the sheets that state it (Nabil, Prabhu, Global IME, Himalayan, Machhapuchchhre) add 2% a year on overdue instalments.
- The loan itself: the term, how much of the property's value the bank lends, and how fast it decides.
Switching your loan to another bank
Moving a loan (a "loan swap" or takeover) lowers your rate when the new bank's base rate plus your new premium is lower than what you pay. On Rs 40 lakh left over 15 years, with a base rate of 4.70%, a premium of 1.00% instead of 3.00% lowers the EMI from Rs 37,537 to Rs 33,109, Rs 7,96,888 over the term.
What it costs: NRB stopped banks charging for early repayment of loans up to Rs 50 lakh in 2019 (reported by Republica), and Nepal Bank's schedule of charges still says so. Above that, the charge is on each bank's schedule; Nepal Bank charges, on a floating-rate term loan, 0.75% of the amount repaid within 2 years, 0.375% of the amount repaid from 2 to 5 years, 0.15% of the amount repaid after 5 years: so Rs 22,500 on Rs 60 lakh repaid in year three. The new bank may also charge its service and valuation fees.
- 1Find your current rate: base rate + premium, from your offer letter and the bank's sheet.
- 2Ask the other bank for its offer in writing: its base rate, your premium, and its fees.
- 3Ask your bank for its prepayment and swap charges; your bank may also lower your premium to keep the loan.
- 4Compare the EMI and the total cost of both, fees included.
What Nepal Rastra Bank's rules protect
- Your premium stays as agreed. NRB has told banks not to raise the premium on a loan already made, and its supervisors ordered refunds in 2022 where they had (Republica). Banks' own sheets apply new premiums to new and renewed loans only: RBB's from 9 Kartik 2083.
- Monthly repricing on a three-month average, so a floating rate cannot jump with one month's base rate (2023 circular, as reported).
- Like loans, like rates: rates on loans of the same kind may differ by at most 2 points.
- No prepayment charge up to Rs 50 lakh (2019 circular, as reported, and Nepal Bank's schedule).
- A cap on the spread, last reported at 4% for commercial banks.
- Rates published in advance: each bank posts its rates for the month on its website.
