Internship in Nepal: finding one, applying, and the report

Last updated 6 min read 7 sections

Quick answer

To get an internship in Nepal, apply two to three months before your college’s internship period: shortlist ten organisations in your field, send each a one-page CV and a short application letter — with your college’s recommendation letter if it issues one — and follow up after a week. Most internships run eight to twelve weeks.

For most students in Nepal the internship is the first line of real experience on the CV, and the first time anyone outside college will vouch for their work. It is worth choosing rather than taking whatever comes. This is how to find one, what to send, and what to bring back from it.

01Where to find an internship in Nepal

  • Employers’ own career pages. Software companies, banks and NGOs post internships next to their jobs. The jobs board lists the ones open now, read from the employers’ own sites — look for “intern” in the title.
  • Your college. The placement cell or your department usually has standing arrangements with banks, hospitals and companies, and its recommendation letter opens doors a cold application does not.
  • Banks and financial institutions. Many take BBS, BBA and MBS students for placements of about eight weeks through their HR departments. Apply to the head office HR or through the branch manager with your college letter.
  • NGOs and development organisations. Look for “intern”, “trainee” and “fellow” on the NGO and INGO jobs page.
  • Asking directly. Many small firms never advertise. A polite email with a CV to the manager of a company you would like to learn from works more often than students expect.

02When to apply

Two to three months before your internship period starts. Banks and larger companies fill their intake early, and the weeks just before a semester’s internship window are when every other student applies too. If your college fixes the dates, put them in your first line so the organisation can check its calendar straight away.

One short page: who you are, the period, what you hope to learn, and what you are attaching.

04Paid or unpaid?

Both exist. Many placements arranged through colleges — banks especially — are unpaid or give a small allowance; software companies and some NGOs more often pay a stipend. The posting should say. If it does not, ask before you accept, along with the working hours and who will supervise you. An internship with a named supervisor and real tasks is worth more than a paid one where you photocopy for two months.

05Making the weeks count

  1. 1On day one, ask your supervisor what they would like you to have done by the end. Write it down.
  2. 2Keep a daily log: the date, what you did, what you learned. Ten minutes at the end of each day.
  3. 3Ask for one task you can finish and point to — a report, a reconciliation, a small feature, a survey.
  4. 4Collect what your report needs as you go: the organisation’s structure, its products, figures you are allowed to use.
  5. 5Before the last week, ask for feedback, and ask whether your supervisor would be a referee.

06Internship report — the structure

Your college gives the exact format and it overrides anything here, but nearly every internship report in Nepal follows this order:

ChapterWhat goes in it
Preliminary pagesTitle page, recommendation and approval letters, declaration, acknowledgements, table of contents, list of abbreviations.
1. IntroductionBackground, objectives of the internship, methodology, limitations.
2. The organisationHistory, structure, departments, products and services.
3. Activities performedThe department you worked in and what you did, week by week — written from your daily log.
4. AnalysisWhat you observed: how a process works, a problem you saw, figures you were given.
5. Conclusion and lessonsWhat you learned, and suggestions to the organisation.
References and annexesSources, forms, your attendance record, the internship certificate.

07The internship certificate

Ask for it in your last week, not months later. It should be on the organisation’s letterhead with a reference number and date, your full name, the department, the exact start and end dates, and a signature with the signer’s name and designation. Colleges will not accept the report without it, and it is the proof behind the internship line on your CV.

The internship certificate page has the wording, and an organisation that has no template can make one there.

Common questions

How do I get an internship in Nepal?

Shortlist organisations in your field, check their career pages and your college’s placement cell, and send a one-page CV with a short application letter two to three months before your internship period. Attach your college’s recommendation letter if it issues one, and follow up by phone or email after a week.

Are internships in Nepal paid?

Some are. Placements arranged through colleges, particularly in banks, are often unpaid or carry a small allowance; software companies and some NGOs more commonly pay a stipend. Ask before accepting if the posting does not say.

How long is an internship in Nepal?

Most run eight to twelve weeks, set by the college’s curriculum. Some companies offer three- to six-month internships that can lead to a job.

How do I write an internship application letter?

State your programme, semester and college, the internship period with dates, the organisation and department you are requesting, and what you have attached. Keep it under one page and attach your CV and your college’s recommendation letter.

What is the format of an internship report?

Preliminary pages, then an introduction with objectives and methodology, a chapter on the organisation, the activities you performed, your analysis, and a conclusion with lessons and suggestions, followed by references and annexes. Use the exact format your college prescribes.

Can I get an internship in Kathmandu from outside the valley?

Yes. Apply by email with your CV and letter, say when you can move, and ask whether any part can be done remotely. Arrange where you will stay before the start date — most internships do not cover accommodation.
