Quick answer
A job application letter is one page: your address and the date, the employer’s address, a subject line naming the post, three short paragraphs — the post and where you saw it, why you fit it, and what you have attached — then your signature. Send it with your CV and copies of your certificates.
In Nepal a vacancy notice still very often says “send an application along with your CV”. That application is a short formal letter, and it is read before the CV — so it decides whether the CV is read at all. Here is the format, and complete letters to copy.

01Application letter, cover letter and CV — the difference
If the vacancy says “application”, write the letter on this page. If it says “cover letter”, see the cover letter guide. Either way you also need a CV — the CV maker makes one free.
| Document | What it is | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Job application letter | A formal request to be considered for a named post, with a list of what is attached. Standard for schools, banks, government and most Nepali employers. | Under one page |
| Cover letter | The same idea with more persuasion — why you, why them. Standard for private companies, NGOs and jobs abroad. | One page |
| CV | The record: experience, education, skills. | One to two pages |
02Job application letter format
- 1Date, then the employer: “The Principal”, “The Human Resource Department”, with the organisation’s name and address.
- 2Subject: “Application for the post of [post]”. Use the exact title from the vacancy.
- 3First paragraph: the post you are applying for and where you saw it advertised, with the date of the notice.
- 4Second paragraph: your qualification and experience in two or three lines — only what the vacancy asks for.
- 5Third paragraph: what you have attached, and that you are available for an interview.
- 6Close: “Yours sincerely”, signature, full name, phone and email.
- 7Enclosures: list them — CV, academic certificates, citizenship copy, experience letters, photos.

04Application letter for a teacher
Name the subject and the level you teach, your degree, and your teaching licence if the post needs one. Schools commonly ask for a demo class, so say you are ready for it.
05Application letter for a bank job
Banks receive hundreds of these for every notice, and the first check is mechanical: the exact post and level from the notice, the minimum qualification, and every document on the list. Many banks also want the application submitted through their own online portal — in that case the letter goes in as an upload, and the portal’s form matters more.
06Application letter for a fresher
With no job to describe, the second paragraph carries your degree and result, one project or internship, and the skills the vacancy names — computer skills, languages, anything you can show a certificate for. Keep the same format. Do not apologise for being a fresher; say what you have.
The fresher CV example is written for exactly this situation.
07In Nepali — जागिरको लागि निवेदन
For a government office, a community school or a cooperative, the application is usually a निवेदन in Nepali. The Nepali guide to a job application has the format and a full sample.
08How to submit it
- By hand or post: print on A4, sign in ink, and put the letter on top of the CV and certificate copies. Write the post on the envelope.
- By email: the letter becomes the body of the email or a PDF attachment — see the email for job application guide.
- Before the deadline: an application that arrives late is not opened. The notice gives the date; count the postal days.
Common questions
How do I write an application letter for a job?
Write the date and the employer’s address, a subject line “Application for the post of [post]”, then three short paragraphs: the post and where you saw the vacancy, your qualification and experience that match it, and the documents you have attached. Close with “Yours sincerely”, your signature, name and phone number.
What is the difference between a job application letter and a cover letter?
An application letter formally requests consideration for a named post and lists the attached documents; it is the standard in schools, banks and government in Nepal. A cover letter argues why you fit the role and the organisation in more depth. Both go with a CV and stay under one page.
What documents do I attach to a job application in Nepal?
Usually a CV, copies of your academic certificates and transcripts, a copy of your citizenship certificate, experience letters if you have worked, and passport-size photographs. The vacancy notice lists exactly what is wanted — send everything on that list and nothing that is not.
Should a job application letter be handwritten or typed?
Typed, unless the notice asks for a handwritten application, which a few organisations still do. Sign a typed letter by hand.
How long should a job application letter be?
Well under one page — about 120 to 180 words in three paragraphs. The detail belongs in the CV.
