IT and software CV / resume — a full example

Developer, QA, support or sysadmin. The one field where a link is worth more than a paragraph.

A software engineer CV is read fast, often by an engineer between tasks. They want to see what you built, how big it was, and a link they can click. The example above puts projects high and describes each job by what was shipped — a school management system, an eSewa and Khalti integration — rather than a list of technologies. The format works for a software developer resume in Nepal or India, from a first internship to a senior role.

What to notice in this one

  • Projects sit high, with links. In this field an employer would rather click once than read a paragraph.
  • Each job says what was built and roughly how big it was, not a list of technologies with no context.
  • Skills are grouped by what they are for, so a reader can scan them in three seconds.

Bibek Thapa

Software Engineer

Lalitpur, Nepal · +977 98XXXXXXXX · bibek.thapa@example.com · linkedin.com/in/bibekthapa

Summary

Software engineer with four years building web applications for Nepali businesses — school management, inventory, and a payment integration with eSewa and Khalti. Comfortable across the stack in React and Node, and used to being the person who talks to the client as well as writing the code.

Experience

Software Engineer

Himalayan Tech Pvt. Ltd. · Pulchowk, Lalitpur · Jan 2024 – Present

  • Built the school management system now used by 14 schools, around 9,000 students
  • Integrated eSewa and Khalti payments, removing manual fee entry for office staff
  • Rewrote the reporting page so a term report loads in under two seconds instead of thirty
  • Handle client calls and requirement gathering for two of the four active projects

Junior Developer

Everest Softwares · Baneshwor, Kathmandu · Aug 2022 – Dec 2023

  • Maintained an inventory system for a chain of six retail shops
  • Fixed a stock-count bug that had been quietly wrong for months
  • Wrote the first automated tests the team had, covering the billing module

Education

BE Computer Engineering

Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, Tribhuvan University · 2074 – 2078

Final year project: an attendance system using face recognition.

Open dataset and API of local bus routes, built from crowd-sourced entries.

  • Linux server basics

Languages

  • Nepali — Native
  • English — Professional

Certifications

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner — Amazon Web Services, 2024

The name, employers and numbers above are invented. Replace every one of them — a CV that still says Bibek Thapa is worse than no CV at all.

Software engineer CV format

The sections, in the order an employer reads them.

  1. Name and links — Name, email, phone, city, and links to GitHub, a portfolio and LinkedIn — the links matter more here than in most fields.
  2. Summary — Two lines: your stack, years of experience and the kind of product you build.
  3. Experience — Each job with dates and two to four lines on what you built, its scale (users, transactions, team size) and your part in it.
  4. Projects — Two or three with a link, one line on what it does and the stack. For freshers this section goes above experience.
  5. Skills — Grouped: languages, frameworks, databases, tools. Only what you would be happy to be interviewed on.
  6. Education — BE, BSc CSIT, BCA, BIT or B.Tech with college and year.
  7. Certifications — Only relevant ones — cloud, a well-known course — and only if recent.

Software engineer CV objective

Two to adapt — change the numbers and names to yours. A career objective, or summary, is the two or three lines under your name.

With experience

Full-stack software engineer with four years building web applications in React and Node.js, including payment integrations and multi-tenant SaaS. Looking for a product team where I can own features end to end and work closely with users.

For a fresher

BSc CSIT graduate who has built and deployed three projects in React and Node.js, including a college attendance app used by 400 students. Looking for a junior developer or internship role in a team that reviews code and ships often.

Skills to put on a software engineer CV

  • JavaScript / TypeScript
  • React or another front-end framework
  • Node.js, Python, Java or PHP on the back end — name yours
  • SQL: MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • REST APIs and integrations
  • Git and code review
  • Linux, Docker and deployment basics
  • Testing — unit and integration

Software engineer CV for freshers

A fresher software engineer CV lives or dies on projects. Put two or three above everything except your name, each with a working link, one line on what it does and one on what you personally built. A final-year project counts; so does an app a real person uses. Keep skills honest — an interviewer will pick the one you know least. An internship, a hackathon or open-source contributions are worth a line each. One page is right.

Common questions

What should a software engineer CV include?

Links to your GitHub or portfolio, a short summary of your stack, each job described by what you built and its scale, two or three projects with links, grouped technical skills, and your degree.

How do I write a software engineer resume as a fresher?

Lead with projects: two or three with working links and a line on your own part in each. Add internships or hackathons, list only skills you can be interviewed on, and keep it to one page.

Should a software developer CV be ATS-friendly?

Yes, for larger companies and foreign employers. Use a single-column layout, standard headings such as Experience and Skills, and write technologies by their common names. This example's template is readable by applicant tracking systems.

Is this software engineer CV format fine for jobs in India?

Yes. The structure is the same across Nepal and India. Name your B.Tech, BCA or MCA and college, and keep the projects and links at the top.

Examples for other fields

Fresher — no work experience

Just finished studying, no job yet. The hardest CV to start, and the most common.

Biodata (बायोडाटा)

The बायोडाटा a local-level, government or cooperative office asks for — personal particulars first, written in Nepali.

Europass

The EU's CV format, asked for by name for study and work in Europe — labels on the left, CEFR language levels, date of birth and nationality.

Accountant

Accounts, audit and tax. A Nepali employer checks the software and the filing first.

Teacher

School and college teaching. The licence and the levels taught come before anything else.

Staff nurse

Hospital and clinic nursing. The council registration is checked before anything else.

Bank and finance

Bank, finance company and co-operative roles. Compliance counts more than sales figures.

Health assistant (HA)

Health post and PHC work. Council registration is the first thing checked, so it goes near the top.

Pharmacist

Retail or hospital pharmacy. Council registration and the drugs you have actually handled are what get read.

Medical lab technician

Pathology and diagnostic lab work. The tests you can run unsupervised are the whole CV.

Driver

Licence category, years without an accident, and the routes you know. Everything else is secondary.

Security guard

Service background, shift discipline and what you actually guarded. Written for agencies and for export employment.

Electrician

Trade level, the work you have wired, and the licence. Written for site work at home and abroad.

Hotel and hospitality

Front office, F&B or housekeeping. Star rating, cover counts and languages are what a hotel reads.

Office assistant

Computer operator and office assistant work — the most common office job in Nepal. Typing speed and Nepali keyboard are checked before anything else.

Receptionist

Front desk at a clinic, office or school. Manner, phone volume and calendar handling are the job.

Sales and distribution

Counter sales, route sales or distribution. Targets and territory are the whole CV.

NGO and INGO

INGO, NGO and project work. Donors, districts covered and beneficiary numbers are what a recruiter scans for.

Civil engineer

Site or design. NEC registration comes first, then the buildings you have actually stood on.

Marketing officer

Digital and on-ground. In Nepal that means Facebook first, and the numbers to prove it worked.

Doctor / medical officer

MBBS and medical officer roles. NMC registration first, then the departments and patient loads you have carried.

Dentist

BDS and clinic practice. Registration, the procedures you do unsupervised, and a patient count per day.

Physiotherapist

Hospital, rehab or sports physio. NHPC registration, caseload and the conditions you treat.

Medical representative

Pharma field sales. Doctors covered, pharmacies in the territory, and target achieved — the three numbers that matter.

Caregiver

Elderly and patient care, at home or abroad. Language level, care skills and the hours you have worked.

Customer service

Call centre, telecom and ISP support. Call volume, resolution and satisfaction scores are the whole job.

HR officer

Recruitment, payroll and labour compliance. Nepal's Labour Act and SSF are what separate an HR CV here from one copied from abroad.

Microfinance field officer

Centre meetings, loan disbursement and collection. Portfolio size and repayment rate are what a microfinance CV is judged on.

Graphic designer

Print, social and brand work. The portfolio link does the persuading; the CV says what you made and for whom.

Agriculture

Agriculture graduates and technicians. Field extension, the crops you know, and the programmes you have worked on.

Veterinary officer

Livestock and animal health. Council registration, the species you treat, and field programmes.

Welder / fabricator

Structural and pipe welding. Processes, positions and a skill-test level — what Gulf and local contractors test you on.

Auto mechanic

Two-wheeler, car or heavy vehicle repair. The vehicles you fix and the systems you diagnose.

Chef / cook

Hotel, restaurant and overseas kitchens. Station, cuisines and covers — the three things a head chef asks.

Housekeeping

Room attendant to housekeeping supervisor. Rooms per shift, standards and chemicals — for hotels here and abroad.

Trekking and tour guide

Licensed trekking and cultural guiding. Routes, altitude experience and the languages your groups speak.

Cabin crew

Air hostess and flight attendant. Safety training, languages and service — what an airline assessment day tests.

Journalist

Print, online and broadcast reporting. Beat, outlet and bylines — and links to the stories.

Lawyer / advocate

Litigation and advisory practice. Bar licence, courts appeared in, and the areas of law you actually practise.
