Most people in Nepal write Nepali on a phone or laptop with an English keyboard. This converter turns romanized Nepali — Nepali written in English letters — into proper Unicode as you type, so it works in Facebook, Gmail, Word, Google Docs and every government form. Nothing to install.
How to type
- Write each word as it sounds: mero naam → मेरो नाम.
- Long vowels are doubled: aa ा, ee ी, oo ू. Short ones are single: i ि, u ु.
- Capitals are the hard (retroflex) letters: T ट, Th ठ, D ड, Dh ढ, N ण, Sh ष.
- M is the dot ं (anusvara), ~ is the moon ँ (chandrabindu), and a full stop becomes ।.
- Two consonants together join: st → स्त, pr → प्र. Write the a between them to keep them apart: kaaThamaaDauM → काठमाडौं.
- Put English words in {braces} to leave them as they are: {CV} banaaune → CV बनाउने.
Unicode, Preeti and romanized — the difference
Unicode is the standard way computers store Nepali, and the only kind that shows correctly everywhere and can be searched. Romanized typing (this page) is a way of entering Unicode with English letters. Preeti is an older font that draws Nepali letters over English ones; text typed in it turns into gibberish without the font.

How do I type ा, ी and ू?
Double the vowel: aa for ा (raam → राम), ee for ी (nadee → नदी), oo for ू (phool → फूल).
How do I type ट, ड, ण and ष?
Use capitals: T ट, Th ठ, D ड, Dh ढ, N ण, Sh ष. Lower-case t, d, n, sh give त, द, न, श.
