Cheques, तमसुक (loan agreements), salary certificates and bank forms all want the amount in figures and in words, and the words have to be exactly right — in Nepali counting, with lakh and crore. How Nepali counts large numbers
Nepal groups numbers in hundreds after the first thousand: 12,34,567 rather than 1,234,567. The names, in order:
- सय — hundred (100)
- हजार — thousand (1,000)
- लाख — lakh (1,00,000 — one hundred thousand)
- करोड — crore (1,00,00,000 — ten million)
- अर्ब — arab (1,00,00,00,000 — one billion)
- खर्ब — kharab (1,00,00,00,00,000 — one hundred billion)
Writing the amount on a cheque or document
The convention is the figure, then the words, ending in मात्र ("only") so nothing can be added after: रु. १२,५००/- (अक्षरेपी बाह्र हजार पाँच सय रुपैयाँ मात्र). In English: Rs. 12,500/- (Twelve Thousand Five Hundred Rupees Only).
