Quick answer
An application for a character certificate is a short letter, in English or Nepali, to the head of your school or campus — the Principal, or the Campus Chief — asking for a चारित्रिक प्रमाणपत्र. Give your full name, class or programme, roll or symbol number, the years you studied there and why you need it, then sign and date it.
Class 11 admission, bachelor’s admission, scholarship forms and many job files ask for a character certificate from your last school or campus. The school writes the certificate; the request is a short letter you write. Below is that letter in English and in Nepali — for school after SEE, after +2 and from a campus — with what to put in it, what the certificate says, and how it differs from the police report.

Who to address it to: school, +2 or campus
A character certificate — चारित्रिक प्रमाणपत्र in Nepali — is an institution’s statement that it knew you for a stated period and found your conduct good. Only the school or campus that taught you can issue it, so the application goes to its head.
The certificate itself, and what it must contain, is on the character certificate page. This page is about asking for one.
| When | Who issues it | Address the application to | Usually needed for |
|---|---|---|---|
| After class 10 (SEE) | Your school | The Principal · श्रीमान् प्रधानाध्यापक ज्यू | Class 11 or a diploma course |
| After class 12 (+2) | The school or college where you did +2, not NEB | The Principal · श्रीमान् प्रधानाध्यापक ज्यू | Bachelor’s admission, scholarships |
| During or after a bachelor’s or master’s | Your campus | The Campus Chief · श्रीमान् क्याम्पस प्रमुख ज्यू | Master’s admission, jobs, study abroad |
What to write in a character certificate application
Keep it to one page and one request. The office reads it to find you in its registers, so the numbers matter more than the wording.
- 1The date, at the top. A Nepali application takes the date in B.S.
- 2Who it is to: the Principal or the Campus Chief, then the name and address of the school or campus.
- 3The subject, in one line: “Application for a character certificate”, or in Nepali “चारित्रिक प्रमाणपत्र पाऊँ भन्ने बारे।”
- 4Who you are: your full name exactly as on your marksheet, your class or programme, section, roll number and the years you studied there.
- 5The number the office looks you up by: your SEE symbol number; your NEB symbol and registration number for +2; your university registration number and exam roll number on a campus.
- 6Why you need it, and by when: “for admission to class 11”, “for a scholarship form due on 15 Bhadra”. A deadline tells the office how soon.
- 7The request, in one sentence, and a thank-you.
- 8Your signature, your name below it, and a phone number in case the office needs to reach you.
- 9What you attach: usually a copy of your marksheet or gradesheet, and your admit card or student ID. Ask the office if it wants anything else.
Application for character certificate from school after SEE (English)
Most students write this one after the SEE results, when the +2 school or college asks for a character certificate with the gradesheet.
चारित्रिक प्रमाणपत्रको लागि निवेदन — Nepali sample for school
The same request in Nepali. The निवेदन tool lays out a Nepali application and downloads it as a PDF: put श्रीमान् प्रधानाध्यापक ज्यू in ‘Addressed to’, the school in ‘Office’, the subject below, and this paragraph in place of the opening one.
Application for character certificate from college after +2
After +2 the certificate comes from the school or college where you did classes 11 and 12, not from NEB. Bachelor’s admissions ask for it: Tribhuvan University’s first-year admission notice lists a character certificate with the transcript, and Kathmandu University’s 2026 admission notice asks for both the +2 and the SEE certificates.
Application to the campus chief — Nepali sample
On a campus the application goes to the Campus Chief (क्याम्पस प्रमुख), and the numbers the office needs are your university registration number and exam roll number. For an English version, use the +2 letter above with “The Campus Chief” and those two numbers.
If the certificate is going with a job application, the application letter itself can be written in the job application tool, in English or Nepali.
What the school writes on the certificate
You do not write the certificate: the school or campus does, on its own letterhead. It is short, and most follow the same pattern.
- The institution’s letterhead, a reference number and the date of issue.
- Your full name and, on a school certificate, your father’s or mother’s name.
- The years you studied there and the class or programme you completed.
- The conduct line — in English usually “bore a good moral character” — and often a sentence that no disciplinary action was taken against you.
- On some certificates, your symbol number and the year you passed; others leave the results to the marksheet.
- The principal’s or campus chief’s signature and name, and the school’s stamp.
Character certificate or police report? Four papers people confuse
When a form asks for a character certificate and says nothing more, it means the one from your school or campus. When a visa, an embassy or a job abroad asks for a police character certificate, it means something else: Nepal Police’s police clearance report (प्रहरी चारित्रिक प्रमाणपत्र). No school can issue that, and you do not apply to your principal for it.
| Paper | Who issues it | What it says | How you get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character certificate (चारित्रिक प्रमाणपत्र) | Your school or campus | Your conduct was good while you studied there | An application to the principal or campus chief |
| Transfer certificate (TC) | Your school | You have left, and the class you completed | From the same office; you can ask for both in one application |
| Migration certificate | The board or university you studied under | You may register with a different board or university | An application to that board or university; some admissions ask for the original |
| Police clearance report (प्रहरी चारित्रिक प्रमाणपत्र) | Nepal Police | No criminal record is held against you | Online at opcr.nepalpolice.gov.np or through the Nagarik App |
How long it takes, and when you will need one
Fees and times differ from school to school. Schools usually issue a character certificate within a few days, some free and some for a small fee. It can take longer in the admission season, or if you left years ago and the office has to search old registers. Ask at the office, and apply as soon as your results are out.
- College admission. Class 11 admission after SEE usually asks for it with the gradesheet. Bachelor’s admission asks for the +2 one, and Kathmandu University’s 2026 notice asks for the SEE one as well.
- Scholarships. Scholarship forms often list it with the marksheet and citizenship.
- Jobs. Some employers and public application forms ask for the character certificate from your last institution with your academic documents.
- Study abroad. Foreign universities and education consultants often ask for an English character certificate from your last school or campus. The visa itself usually wants the police report instead.
Common questions
How do I write an application for a character certificate?
Address it to the head of your school or campus: the Principal or the Campus Chief. Write the date, a one-line subject, your full name, class or programme, roll number, symbol or registration number and the years you studied there, why you need the certificate, and a short request. Sign it, add your phone number and attach a copy of your marksheet.
Who issues a character certificate after +2 in Nepal?
The school or college where you studied classes 11 and 12, signed by its principal. NEB, the examinations board, does not issue it.
How long does it take to get a character certificate from school?
Usually a few days, and some schools issue it the same day. It can take longer in the admission season or if you left the school years ago. Ask at the school office, and apply as soon as your results are out.
Is a school character certificate the same as a police character certificate?
No. The school or campus certificate says your conduct was good while you studied there. The police character certificate — the police clearance report, प्रहरी चारित्रिक प्रमाणपत्र — is Nepal Police stating that it holds no criminal record against you. You apply for it online at opcr.nepalpolice.gov.np, not to your principal.
Can my parent apply for the character certificate for me?
Many schools accept an application handed in by a parent or guardian, especially for a younger student. Write it with your own name, class and roll number, or have your parent write it giving those details. Ask the school first: some want the student to sign it or collect the certificate in person.
I lost my character certificate. Can I get another one?
Usually, yes. Write to the same school or campus asking for a duplicate (प्रतिलिपि), giving your name, the years you studied, your class and your symbol or registration number, and say that the original was lost. Only that institution can issue it, and searching old registers is what takes the time.
