Preeti and Unicode — what is the difference?

Preeti stores English letters and relies on the font to draw them as Nepali: the letter g becomes न, ] becomes the े sign. Copy that text anywhere without the font and it turns back into English characters.

Unicode stores the Nepali letters themselves. Fonts such as Kalimati, Mangal and Noto Sans Devanagari are Unicode fonts, and Unicode text reads correctly on any device, in search engines, and in online forms — including the national ID and voter registration forms that ask for your name in Nepali.

How to convert Preeti to Unicode

• Open the document — usually a Word file or an old notice — and select the Preeti text.
• Copy it. What is copied is the English-letter form, which is what this converter reads.
• Paste it into the Preeti box above. The Unicode Nepali appears immediately.
• Copy the Unicode result into your form, email, Facebook post, or a Word document set in Kalimati or Mangal.

When you need Unicode to Preeti

Some printing presses, older office systems and layout software still expect Preeti. Switch the converter to Unicode → Preeti, paste the Nepali text, and paste the result into a document set in the Preeti font.

Write in Unicode wherever you can and convert only for the system that needs Preeti: Unicode is what will still open correctly in ten years.

Typing Nepali in Unicode directly

Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone all include Nepali keyboards. The Nepali (Romanized) layout puts letters where their sounds are on an English keyboard; the traditional layout is close to the old typewriter. Either types Unicode, so there is nothing to convert.

What this converter handles

It follows the standard Preeti keyboard layout, including the conjuncts (क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, द्य, श्र), the ि that Preeti types before its letter, the र् (reph) Preeti types after it, and Nepali digits. Fonts that use a different layout — some versions of Kantipur or PCS Nepali — may differ for a few characters; check the result before you rely on it.
