Compress PDF: reduce a PDF's size

To compress a PDF, choose the file and a level — or a limit such as 200 KB — and download the smaller copy. Each page is redrawn as a compressed image at its original size, which shrinks scanned documents a lot. Text in the result can't be selected, so it suits scans best.

Compressed on your device · nothing uploaded

Each page is saved as an image, so text in the result can't be selected or searched. Best for scans and photos of documents.

Upload limits on application portals are often a few hundred KB, and a phone scan of a certificate is easily several MB. This tool shrinks the PDF on your device until it fits.

Which setting to use

  • Medium suits most scans: clear to read, much smaller.
  • Light keeps small print sharp; Strong is the smallest, for tight limits.
  • A size limit overrides the level and aims for just under it.

What compression changes

Every page becomes an image. For a scan that is what it already was, so nothing is lost but bytes. For a PDF made from Word, text stops being selectable — keep the original too. If the original is already small, the page tells you rather than handing back a bigger file.

Common questions

How do I reduce a PDF to under 200 KB?

Choose the PDF, set the limit to 200 KB and press Compress. The size of the result is shown; for many pages, a higher limit may be needed.

Will the compressed PDF still be readable?

Yes, at Light and Medium. Strong is for very tight limits and can blur small print.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It's compressed by your own browser and never leaves your device.
