Quick answer
To become a doctor in Nepal you study +2 science with physics, chemistry and biology. Then you pass the Medical Education Commission’s entrance examination (MECEE-BL) at the 50th percentile or above. After that comes the five-and-a-half-year MBBS, including a one-year internship, and the Nepal Medical Council licensing examination. The government-fixed MBBS fee is Rs 41.68 lakh in the Kathmandu valley and Rs 45.96 lakh outside.
Medicine is the most competitive course in Nepal and the most regulated. One commission runs one entrance examination for every medical college, fixes how many students each may admit and caps what they may charge. That makes the path clearer than it used to be. This guide sets it out from grade 11 to the first job, with the commission’s own rules.

The MBBS entrance exam in Nepal: MECEE-BL
The Medical Education Common Entrance Examination, Bachelor Level, is the single entrance test for MBBS, BDS, nursing and the other health science bachelor’s programmes. Every university and academy in Nepal uses it. A candidate must score at or above the 50th percentile to be placed on the merit list. Seats are then allotted by rank and by the colleges the candidate has chosen, through the commission’s matching system.
The last completed cycle was for the 2026 academic session. The MBBS examination was held on 1 November 2025 and the result came ten days later. Edusanjal reported a 50th-percentile cut-off of 52.25 out of 200, with 8,772 candidates qualifying. With 2,635 seats, qualifying is only the first hurdle: the rank decides everything.
MBBS in Nepal fees for Nepali students
The ceiling was last raised by 3.6% for the 2078/79 session, and the commission said in 2024 that it remained the prevailing fee. A college may not charge above it under any heading, and paying in instalments is the norm. Hostel, food, books and instruments are extra.
- Ask the college for the instalment schedule in writing before you accept a seat.
- Pay through the bank, to the college’s account, and keep every receipt. Complaints about extra charges are made to the commission.
- Families who finance the fee with a private loan should put it in writing. The loan agreement tool drafts one, and the EMI calculator shows what a bank education loan costs each month.
| Where the college is | Maximum total MBBS fee |
|---|---|
| Inside the Kathmandu valley | Rs 41,68,090 |
| Outside the Kathmandu valley | Rs 45,95,720 |
| Scholarship seat | No tuition fee |
MBBS scholarship in Nepal
- There were 691 scholarship seats in the 2082/83 intake: 380 general and 311 reserved for specified groups.
- Public medical colleges give 75% of their seats on scholarship and private colleges 10%, as reported by The Kathmandu Post in July 2026.
- Scholarship seats go by entrance rank, so they need a far higher score than the qualifying percentile.
- The service bond: a scholarship student must serve for two years after graduating, one in a remote area and one in an accessible one, according to the commission’s FAQ.
How many years to become a doctor in Nepal
- 1Grades 11 and 12 in science with biology — two years.
- 2Entrance preparation and MECEE-BL — often a further year for those who repeat.
- 3MBBS — four and a half years of study.
- 4Compulsory rotating internship — one year, in the college’s teaching hospital.
- 5Nepal Medical Council licensing examination and registration. Every graduate, from Nepal or abroad, must pass it to practise.
- 6Work as a medical officer, and for scholarship students, the two-year service.
- 7Specialisation (MD or MS) — a further three years after a separate postgraduate entrance examination, for those who choose it.
After MBBS: licence, jobs and salary
With the council’s registration you can work as a medical officer. In government service that is an eighth-level post recruited through the Public Service Commission or a provincial commission; in private and teaching hospitals it is by direct application. Doctor salary in Nepal gives the 2083 government scale and the sourced figures for private hospitals.
The doctor CV example shows how to present the registration number, internship rotations and procedures, and Lok Sewa preparation covers the commission examination. Students going abroad for medicine instead need a No Objection Certificate; see NOC for abroad study.
