Quick answer
A government staff nurse in Nepal enters the health service at the fifth level, on a starting basic salary of Rs 38,203 a month from Shrawan 2083, or about Rs 47,023 with allowances. An ANM enters at the fourth level on Rs 36,192 and a nursing officer at the seventh on Rs 50,436. Private hospitals have been directed to pay at least the fifth-level starting scale or 80% of it, and reported pay is often lower.
What a nurse earns in Nepal depends on the qualification, which decides the level, and on the employer. Government and government-funded hospitals pay the national health service scale. A Health Ministry directive covers private hospitals, and many have resisted it. Both are set out here with their sources.

Staff nurse salary in a private hospital in Nepal
Private hospitals do not follow the government scale automatically. Under a Health Ministry agreement and directive, reported by The Rising Nepal (1 November 2025) and Khabarhub (4 April 2026):
- Private medical college teaching hospitals must pay nurses and health workers at least the fifth-level starting scale, then Rs 34,730 a month, from Kartik 2082.
- Other private and community hospitals and dental colleges must pay at least 80% of it — Rs 27,784.
- That floor was fixed against the old scale. The fifth-level start has since risen to Rs 38,203; we found no notice confirming that the private floor rose with it.
- What is actually paid is often less. Onlinekhabar reported in October 2025 that many nurses were on about Rs 15,000 a month, and the private medical college association said it could not pay government-level salaries.

How to earn more as a nurse
- 1Register with the Nepal Nursing Council. No hospital can lawfully employ you as a nurse without it.
- 2Apply through the Public Service Commission or a provincial commission for a permanent government post, which brings the scale, grades and a pension.
- 3Upgrade the qualification. A PCL nurse who completes a Bachelor of Nursing can compete for seventh-level nursing officer posts.
- 4Specialise — critical care, operating theatre, midwifery, psychiatric nursing — which is what private hospitals pay more for.
- 5Compare the whole offer, not the monthly figure: duty hours, night allowance, Social Security Fund contribution and paid leave.
