Driving license online form in Nepal: how to apply, step by step

Last updated 7 min read 9 sections

Quick answer

Since 1 Shrawan 2083 a new driving license, and a renewal, is applied for online on your province's own site (for Bagmati, edlvrs.bagamati.gov.np), and the fee is paid online too. Scanning the QR code in your National ID or the Nagarik App fills the form for you. Then you sit the written exam (likhit, 25 questions, 60 marks to pass) and the trial (70% to pass), and the smart-card license is printed.

This is the process as the Department of Transport Management sets it out: its notice on the online system, its citizen charter, and the answers its own written-exam question books give on fees, ages and the trial. Each figure says where it comes from. The online form itself shows the fee and the next steps for your category, and it is the authority when anything here differs.

All 1,000 questions are on this site with their answers, in Nepali and English: bike and scooter, car, and the 85 traffic signs. The mock test is drawn the way the real paper is. In Nepali: लाइसेन्स लिखित परीक्षा मक टेस्ट.

  • 25 questions in 30 minutes, 4 marks each. 60 marks of 100 pass, which is 15 right.
  • Every question comes from the department's published collection for your category: one of 500 for bike and scooter, one of 500 for car. A fixed number comes from each subject, 6 of them on traffic signs.
  • Failed, or missed it? You can sit it again after 3 months (A/K question 152). Sent out of the exam room for misconduct, you wait 3 months too (B question 173).
  • Adding a category to a license you already hold needs no written exam (B question 200).

The trial (practical test): what fails you

License print check and urgent printing

  • Is my card printed? Check at applydlnew.dotm.gov.np/licensecheck, as the department's citizen charter gives it.
  • Going abroad and need it fast? The department prints urgently for work, study and some other reasons. Apply online at applydlnew.dotm.gov.np/login; it takes at least 72 hours once approved.
  • For work abroad the charter lists your passport, visa or residential card, ticket and work permit (labour approval); for study, the No Objection Certificate or Certificate of Eligibility, the university offer letter, passport, visa and ticket. For the labour approval itself see shram swikriti.

Driving license renewal

  • Renewal is online too, on the province sites above, since 1 Shrawan 2083.
  • Under the amended rules a license is valid for 10 years (A/K question 165, B question 112). One older question in the same book still says 5 (A/K question 146).
  • Renew within 3 months (90 days) of expiry with no fine (A/K question 131, B question 132). After that a fine applies, and a license not renewed within 5 years of expiry is cancelled (A/K questions 166, 190).

Lost license, and a license from abroad

  • Lost it? Get a recommendation letter from the traffic police, then apply to the transport office with it and the fee for a duplicate, Rs 500 (A/K questions 142, 198; B question 65).
  • A license from a Transport Management Office is valid throughout Nepal (A/K question 199).
  • A foreign license can be validated in Nepal without a test, and an international driving permit is valid throughout Nepal (A/K question 218, B question 111).
