Quick answer
The SEE grading system in Nepal turns each paper’s marks into a letter grade: A+ for 90% and above (4.0), then A 3.6, B+ 3.2, B 2.8, C+ 2.4, C 2.0 and D 1.6 for 35% to 40%. Below 35% in theory, or 40% in internal assessment, the subject is NG and no GPA is given.
Every SEE subject is graded twice: once for the theory exam and once for the internal assessment your school sends in. The rules are in the Letter Grading Directive, 2083, which replaced the 2078 directive in May 2026, and in NEB’s result notices. This page sets them out with the dates, works a GPA through, and says what to do about an NG.

SEE grade table: percentage, grade and grade point
The grade is set by the percentage of the paper’s full marks, not by the raw mark. Each grade covers a band, so 80% and 89% both earn A and 3.6.
Theory and internal assessment are converted to grades separately. Since SEE 2080, they are not added together first.
| Marks | Grade | Grade point | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90% and above | A+ | 4.0 | Outstanding |
| 80% to below 90% | A | 3.6 | Excellent |
| 70% to below 80% | B+ | 3.2 | Very good |
| 60% to below 70% | B | 2.8 | Good |
| 50% to below 60% | C+ | 2.4 | Satisfactory |
| 40% to below 50% | C | 2.0 | Acceptable |
| 35% to below 40% | D | 1.6 | Basic |
| Below 35% | NG | None | Not graded |
SEE pass marks: 35% in theory, 40% in internal
There is no overall pass mark. Each subject is graded only if you reach 35% in the theory exam and 40% in the internal assessment. Miss either and that subject is NG, however good the other part is.
Theory is the board’s written exam. Internal assessment is the marks your school sends for practical work, projects and class tests. NEB states the minimums in marks:
| Paper | Full marks | Lowest mark to be graded |
|---|---|---|
| Theory, most subjects | 75 | 27 |
| Internal, most subjects | 25 | 10 |
| Theory, 50-mark subjects | 50 | 18 |
| Internal or practical, 50-mark subjects | 50 | 20 |
How the SEE GPA is calculated
The GPA is the average of your grade points, weighted by credit hours. A subject with more credit hours counts for more.
The credit hours are set by the Curriculum Development Centre’s Grade 9–10 curriculum. Nepali, English, Mathematics and Science and Technology carry 5 each; Social Studies and the two optional subjects carry 4 each. That is 32 in all. One credit hour stands for 32 hours of teaching in the year.
GPA = Σ(credit hours × grade point) ÷ Σ credit hours. Because theory and internal have their own grades, a 5-credit subject counts as 3.75 credit hours at the theory grade and 1.25 at the internal grade, and a 4-credit subject as 3 and 1. NEB’s notices do not print the formula, so if your grade sheet shows different credit hours, use the ones on your sheet.
A sample grade sheet, worked through:
| Subject | Credit hours | Theory | Internal | Credit × point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nepali | 3.75 + 1.25 | B+ (3.2) | A (3.6) | 16.50 |
| English | 3.75 + 1.25 | A (3.6) | A+ (4.0) | 18.50 |
| Mathematics | 3.75 + 1.25 | B (2.8) | A (3.6) | 15.00 |
| Science and Technology | 3.75 + 1.25 | B+ (3.2) | A+ (4.0) | 17.00 |
| Social Studies | 3 + 1 | B+ (3.2) | A (3.6) | 13.20 |
| Optional I | 3 + 1 | A (3.6) | A+ (4.0) | 14.80 |
| Optional II | 3 + 1 | B (2.8) | A (3.6) | 12.00 |
| Total | 32 | 107.00 |
What NG means
- NG is “not graded”. It means a theory mark below 35% or an internal mark below 40% in that subject. It carries no grade point.
- One NG stops the GPA. Your other subjects keep their grades, but no GPA is given until the NG subject is cleared.
- No original certificate yet. The directive gives the original SEE certificate only when every subject reaches at least C in internal and D in theory, and further study needs that certificate.
- No Class 11 subject registration. NEB registers Class 11 subjects only for students with a GPA of at least 1.6, so an NG has to be cleared first.
- It is common. In SEE 2082, 146,507 of the 430,667 regular candidates had at least one NG, about one in three.
NG in SEE: the supplementary (grade increment) exam
NEB holds a supplementary exam (पूरक परीक्षा, also called the grade increment exam) about a month after the results, so that most students can still join Class 11 the same year. In 2082 the results came out on 11 May 2026 and the supplementary ran from 15 to 23 June.
- 1Check you can sit it. You sat SEE as a regular candidate this year and got NG, or were absent, in one or more subjects. There is no two-subject limit: you sit every subject you got NG in or missed.
- 2Apply through your school in the window NEB announces. For SEE 2082 it was 15 to 29 May 2026, with a fee of Rs 500 paid into NEB’s revenue account and the voucher attached to the form.
- 3Sit the exam on your regular admission card and symbol number.
- 4Check the result on the same sites as the main result. In 2082, 83,523 of the 129,114 who sat the supplementary were graded.
- 5Still NG? Sit only those subjects in the next annual SEE, as a grade increment candidate, through the school you studied at. The directive allows this for three years. If you did the internal assessment but missed the written exam, your internal marks are kept for those three years.
SEE GPA to percentage: there is no official formula
NEB has no formula that turns a GPA back into a percentage, and none of its notices gives one. The 2083 directive leaves any comparison with the old divisions to a separate equivalence rule.
A grade point stands for a band of marks, and a GPA is an average of several, so the honest answer is a range. Multiplying by 25 is widely repeated and is not NEB’s method: it calls 3.2 “80%” when 3.2 is the 70% to 80% band.
The GPA to percentage converter reads any GPA this way. Common values:
| GPA | On the NEB scale | Marks band |
|---|---|---|
| 4.0 | A+ | 90% to 100% |
| 3.8 | Between A and A+ | Between 80–90% (A) and 90–100% (A+) |
| 3.6 | A | 80% to below 90% |
| 3.4 | Between B+ and A | Between 70–80% (B+) and 80–90% (A) |
| 3.2 | B+ | 70% to below 80% |
| 3.0 | Between B and B+ | Between 60–70% (B) and 70–80% (B+) |
| 2.8 | B | 60% to below 70% |
| 2.6 | Between C+ and B | Between 50–60% (C+) and 60–70% (B) |
| 2.4 | C+ | 50% to below 60% |
| 2.0 | C | 40% to below 50% |
| 1.6 | D | 35% to below 40% |
SEE 2082 results: how many got each GPA
NEB publishes how many students fall in each GPA band. It does not give the number with exactly 4.0: 48,392 students were in the top band, 3.6 to 4.0.
| SEE 2082 | Students |
|---|---|
| GPA 3.6 to 4.0 | 48,392 |
| GPA 3.2 to 3.6 | 80,372 |
| GPA 2.8 to 3.2 | 94,222 |
| GPA 2.4 to 2.8 | 55,977 |
| GPA 2.0 to 2.4 | 5,190 |
| GPA 1.6 to 2.0 | 7 |
| Graded in every subject | 284,160 (65.98%) |
| NG in at least one subject | 146,507 (34.02%) |
| Graded after the supplementary exam | 367,683 of 430,667 (85.37%) |
What to check on your SEE grade sheet
Check these as soon as you download the grade sheet. The window for questioning marks is short: for SEE 2082 the retotal opened four days after the result and stayed open for a week.
- Name, surname and date of birth, against your birth certificate. NEB corrects them from your admission card. If the card is wrong too, you have five years from the result to apply with the Chief District Officer’s decision.
- Symbol number, registration number and school.
- Two grades for each subject, one for theory and one for internal, with the final grade and grade point beside them.
- The credit hours: 32 in all for the usual seven subjects. They are what your GPA is weighted by.
- Any NG, and whether a GPA is printed. With an NG there is none.
- A subject with no result at all. Download the application on see.gov.np, list the subjects, attach a copy of your admission card and send it through your Education Development and Coordination Unit, or to the office directly.
- Two grade sheets after a supplementary or grade increment exam. Ask for one consolidated grade sheet with your GPA, through your school or at the Office of the Controller of Examinations in Sanothimi. It cost Rs 500 in 2082.
- 1Marks look wrong? Apply for a retotal (पुनर्योग) online at payment.see.gov.np, subject by subject, in the week NEB sets after the result. For SEE 2082 it was 15 to 21 May 2026.
- 2Still unhappy? Ask to see the answer book. You can only do this after applying for a retotal.
- 3Then ask for a re-examination (पुनः परीक्षण). Three subject experts mark the answer book again. An answer book is re-examined only once.
After SEE: Class 11 and the GPA each stream needs
NEB sets one rule: you need a GPA of at least 1.6 to register subjects in Class 11. It sets no separate GPA for Science, Management, Humanities or Education. Each school or college sets its own cut-off, and Science usually asks for the most. Go by the college’s admission notice, not by a stream rule quoted online, as most of those date from the old scale.
For Class 11 and 12, the NEB GPA calculator has each stream’s subjects and credit hours filled in. For a bachelor’s or any other transcript, use the GPA calculator.
Thinking of MBBS, nursing or pharmacy? Those come after Class 12 Science, through the medical entrance exam, and eligibility for it is set on your Class 12 result, not your SEE. See the CEE syllabus and marks distribution.
Class 11 admission usually needs a character certificate from your school as well.
Common questions
What is the pass mark in SEE?
There is no overall pass mark. Each subject needs 35% in the theory exam, which is 27 out of 75, and 40% in internal assessment, 10 out of 25. Below either, the subject is NG. For 50-mark papers the minimums are 18 in theory and 20 in internal or practical.
Is 2.8 GPA B or B+ in Nepal?
B. 2.8 is the grade point for B, which covers 60% to below 70%. B+ is 3.2, for 70% to below 80%.
Is 3.7 GPA A+ in Nepal?
No. A+ is 4.0, for 90% and above. A GPA of 3.7 is an average that sits above A (3.6, 80% to below 90%) and below A+.
How many students got 4 GPA in SEE 2082?
NEB did not publish the number with exactly 4.0. It reported 48,392 students with a GPA from 3.6 to 4.0, out of 430,667 who sat the regular exam.
What happens if I get NG in SEE?
No GPA is given until the subject is cleared. Sit the supplementary exam about a month after the result, in every subject you got NG in or missed, by applying through your school. If a subject is still NG, you can sit it again in the next annual SEE, for up to three years.
How do I convert SEE GPA to percentage?
NEB has no official formula. Read the band instead: 3.6 is A, 80% to below 90%; 3.2 is B+, 70% to below 80%. A GPA between two grade points sits between their bands. Multiplying by 25 is not NEB’s method.
