Quick answer

The NEB grading system for Class 11 and 12 grades each paper by its percentage: A+ 4.0 for 90% and above, then A 3.6, B+ 3.2, B 2.8, C+ 2.4, C 2.0 and D 1.6 for 35% to 40%. Every subject needs at least D in theory and C (40%) in internal assessment. Below either, it is NG.

Class 11 and Class 12 are graded under the Letter Grading Directive, 2083, which replaced the 2078 directive in May 2026. NEB sets and marks the Class 12 exam; your school runs Class 11. This page gives the grades and the marks behind them, works a Class 12 GPA through its credit hours, and sets out NEB’s 2083 rules for NG, the chance exam and the certificates.

Class 11 and 12 grade table (Letter Grading Directive, 2083)

The directive uses one table for every class from 1 to 12, so Class 11, Class 12 and SEE share it. NEB’s assessment framework for Grade 12 prints the same eight grades.

Each part of a subject is graded on its own percentage. Theory and internal assessment get separate grades; they are not added together first.

NEB grading for 75 marks: the lowest mark for each grade

Most Class 11 and 12 subjects are 75 marks of theory, the written exam, and 25 marks of internal assessment from your school: practical work, projects and class tests. NEB’s Grade 12 framework states that split.

The grade comes from the percentage of each part, so the marks behind it depend on the full marks. The lowest whole mark for each grade:

  • A 50-mark theory paper needs 45 for A+, 40 for A, 35 for B+, 30 for B, 25 for C+, 20 for C and 18 for D.
  • Internal or practical out of 50 needs 20 to be graded, which is C.
  • Half marks? Work from the percentage. 67.5 out of 75 is exactly 90%, which is A+. NEB states its SEE minimums in whole marks, 27 of 75 and 18 of 50, under the same directive.

How the Class 12 GPA is worked out, with an example

The GPA is the average of your grade points, weighted by credit hours. The Curriculum Development Centre sets them, the same in Class 11 and Class 12: Nepali 3, English 4, Social Studies and Life Skill Education or Mathematics 5, and three optional subjects 5 each. That is 27. One credit hour stands for 32 hours of teaching in the year.

An extra optional subject, beyond the three, is a non-credit subject under the curriculum, so it should not move your GPA.

GPA = Σ(credit hours × grade point) ÷ Σ credit hours. Because theory and internal have their own grades, each subject’s credit hours are split in the ratio of its marks: a 5-credit subject counts 3.75 at the theory grade and 1.25 at the internal grade, English 3 and 1, Nepali 2.25 and 0.75. NEB’s notices do not print this split, so if your grade sheet shows other credit hours, use the ones on your sheet.

Is D a pass? The minimum grade in every subject

There is no overall pass mark and no minimum GPA. NEB’s rule is per subject: at least D in theory (35%, 27 out of 75) and at least C in internal assessment (40%, 10 out of 25). Only students who reach both in every subject get the transcript and certificates.

  • D in theory counts. It is the lowest grade that does, at 1.6 points.
  • D in internal does not. Internal assessment has to reach C. Below 10 out of 25, the subject is not graded.
  • NG is not a zero. It carries no grade point at all, so it cannot be averaged in. The directive gives the grade sheet with a GPA once the class is complete, so while an NG stands, expect grades but no final GPA.
  • Get the internal grade before the board exam. The directive says a student who sits the annual exam without the required internal grade can have that exam cancelled, and NEB’s form notice for the 2083 exam repeated it.
  • Attendance counts too. To sit a final exam you need 75% attendance of the days your school was open.

Class 12 grade increment (chance) exam: who can sit it and when

NEB holds one supplementary exam a few weeks after the Class 12 result. Its notices call it the मौका (पूरक) परीक्षा, the chance or supplementary exam; most students call it the grade increment exam. It lets a student who is one or two subjects short finish the same year.

  1. 1Check you qualify. You sat Class 12 that year as a regular student, have at least D in theory in every other subject, and have no more than two subjects that are NG or absent: two NG, two absent, or one of each. It is not open to partial candidates, and it cannot raise a grade you already have.
  2. 2Pay and apply through your school. For 2083 the fee was Rs 800 by 3 July 2026 (Asar 19), or Rs 1,600 with the late fee by 10 July (Asar 26). Schools handed the forms in by 12 July (Asar 28).
  3. 3Sit it on your day. It ran on two days only, 18 and 19 July 2026 (Shrawan 2 and 3), from 11 am to 2 pm. Anyone with one subject sat it on the first day. NEB makes no second arrangement for anyone absent.
  4. 4Check the result. It came out on 6 August 2026: 57,897 of the 71,310 who sat (81.19%) were graded in every subject. The certificates could be applied for ten days later, with Rs 500 extra for the supplementary certificate, and a retotal from 9 to 15 August, Rs 1,000 a subject.
  5. 5More than two, or still NG? Sit those subjects in the next annual Class 12 exam as a partial (आंशिक) candidate, through the school you sat with, applying only for the NG or absent subjects. The directive allows this for three years. NEB’s form notice for the 2083 exam took partial candidates with registration numbers beginning 79, 80 and 81, and called it 79’s last chance.

NG in Class 11: clear it before the Class 12 exam form

Class 11 is examined by your school, not by NEB. The board handed the Class 11 exam to schools in 2022, and its 2083/84 calendar has schools holding it after the Class 12 exam and finishing by the end of Baisakh 2084. The school issues the Class 11 grade sheet.

The same minimum applies. To sit Class 12 as a regular candidate, every Class 11 subject needs at least D in theory and C in internal. NEB’s form notice for the 2083 exam required the Class 11 grade sheet showing those grades, certified by the head teacher, with the registration card. Without it, the form was not valid.

  • Clear it before the forms go in. For the 2084 Class 12 exam, the forms are due at your school by 14 January 2027 (Poush 30, 2083), or by 29 January (Magh 15) with the late fee.
  • Ask your school about the retake. It runs the Class 11 exam, so it sets when an NG can be retaken. The last Class 11 grade increment exam NEB held itself, in 2082, was only for old candidates with registration numbers up to 76.
  • Keep the same subjects. Class 12 must be taken in the subjects and group you studied in Class 11. A different subject on the form is cancelled.
  • NEB checks again at the end. The application for the Class 12 transcript and certificates needs the Class 11 and Class 12 grade sheets showing the minimum grades.

Class 12 GPA to percentage: what to give a college or embassy

NEB publishes no formula that turns a Class 12 GPA into a percentage, and none of its notices gives one. The 2083 directive leaves any comparison with the old divisions to a separate equivalence directive, which we could not find.

A grade point stands for a band of marks, and a GPA averages many of them, so the honest answer is a range. Multiplying by 25 is widely repeated and is not NEB’s method: it calls 3.2 “80%” when 3.2 is the 70% to 80% band.

  • A form in Nepal that asks for a percentage: write the GPA with its scale, “3.40 out of 4.0”, or ask the office what it accepts.
  • A university or embassy abroad: it converts your transcript by its own rules. Send the transcript with the grade table, not a figure you worked out.

Grade sheet, transcript and provisional certificate: what to check

The grade sheet is the result of one sitting. After the result, NEB issues three papers on application: the transcript, the migration certificate and the provisional certificate, which it calls TMP. Colleges ask for them at admission. The original certificate comes only once every subject has the minimum grade.

  • Name, surname and date of birth. NEB corrects these on the Class 12 certificate from your Class 10 records, so they should match your SEE grade sheet. Report any error, or a subject with no result, within six months of the result.
  • Registration and symbol numbers, school and subjects.
  • Two grades for each subject, theory and internal, each with its grade point and credit hours.
  • The credit hours, 27 in all for six subjects. They are what your GPA is weighted by.
  • Any NG or absent subject, and whether a GPA is printed.
  • Two grade sheets after a chance or partial exam. Apply for one consolidated grade sheet and certificate. NEB’s 2083 records directive has a form for it.
  1. 1Transcript, migration and provisional certificate. Apply from 15 days after the result, through your school. In 2083 the fee was Rs 1,500. Attach your Class 11 and Class 12 grade sheets with the minimum grades.
  2. 2Marks look wrong? Apply for a retotal (पुनर्योग) online at neb.gov.np within 7 days of the result, Rs 1,000 a subject. For 2083 it ran from 20 to 26 June 2026.
  3. 3Then see the answer book and ask for re-examination (पुनः परीक्षण). You can only do this after applying for a retotal. Three subject experts mark it again, and an answer book is re-examined only once.

Common questions

Is D pass or fail in NEB Class 12?

In theory, D (35% to below 40%, 1.6) is the lowest grade that counts. In internal assessment it is not enough: you need C, 40%, which is 10 out of 25. Below either, the subject is NG and has to be cleared.

Is 3.20 A or B+ in Nepal?

B+. 3.2 is the grade point for B+, 70% to below 80%. A is 3.6, for 80% to below 90%. A GPA between 3.2 and 3.6 sits between the two.

How many subjects can I clear in the Class 12 chance exam?

Up to two. In 2083 NEB let regular candidates sit it with NG or absence in no more than two subjects and at least D in theory in the rest. With three or more, you sit them as a partial candidate in the next annual exam in Baisakh.

Can I sit the Class 12 exam with NG in Class 11?

Not as a regular candidate. NEB’s form notice for the 2083 exam required at least D in theory and C in internal in every Class 11 subject, on a grade sheet certified by the head teacher. Your school runs the Class 11 exam and its retake, so ask it when the next one is.

Is there an official GPA to percentage formula for Class 12?

No. NEB publishes none, and the grade sheet shows no percentage. Read the band instead: 3.6 is A, 80% to below 90%; 3.2 is B+, 70% to below 80%. Multiplying by 25 is not NEB’s method.

When is the NEB Class 12 exam in 2084?

NEB’s 2083/84 calendar puts it in the first week of Baisakh 2084, mid-April 2027, with the result in the first week of Asar and the chance exam in the first week of Shrawan. Exam forms go in through your school by 14 January 2027 (Poush 30), or 29 January (Magh 15) with the late fee.
