Guide rule and documents

NTB's list of routes under the 2023 guide rule does not name North ABC, but the Kathmandu Post (20 Nov 2025) reports a licensed guide is required for foreign trekkers in every trekking area except Everest, and this one is inside the Annapurna Conservation Area. Agencies sell it with a guide and a camping crew. Nepali citizens are not covered by the rule.

Common questions

How much does the North Annapurna Base Camp trek cost for a Nepali?

About Rs 24,931 per person for 4 days (Rs 18,983–30,878), trekking without a guide and renting a sleeping bag, down jacket and poles. Permits are Rs 100. The planner above changes it for your days, transport and group.

How much does the North Annapurna Base Camp trek cost for an Indian?

About Rs 36,756 (₹22,951) per person for 4 days, at the SAARC rate for permits (Rs 1,000–2,000) and with the licensed guide the rules require.

How much does the North Annapurna Base Camp trek cost for a foreigner?

About USD 257 (Rs 39,256) per person for 4 days with a licensed guide, before Kathmandu hotels, insurance and any agency margin. Permits: Rs 3,000–5,000.

Do I need a guide for North Annapurna Base Camp?

Yes, for foreigners and SAARC nationals.

Which permits do I need for North Annapurna Base Camp?

Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP), TIMS card. There is no check post on the trail itself: permits are checked on the Beni–Jomsom road near Tatopani.

Can I do North ABC in 3 days?

Yes, from Hum Khola. Nepali trekkers walk to Sandhikharka (3–4 h), on to Panchakunda Lake (5–6 h), see the base camp at dawn and walk out to Hum Khola (4–7 h). The "3 days" and "4 days" trips count the night bus from Kathmandu to Tatopani and the day home. That pace climbs about 1,200 m in two days, which is fast: headache or vomiting means going down.

How high is North Annapurna Base Camp?

4,190 m in most news sources. The tent camp at Panchakunda Lake below it is about 4,050 m, and Hum Khola, where the jeep road ends, about 2,880 m. Figures from 4,090 m to 4,500 m are published for the base camp.

Are there hotels on the North ABC trek?

Tent hotels, since spring 2025: at Hum Khola, Phutphute, Sandhikharka, Gufaphat, Bhusket Mela and Panchakunda, run by local people under ACAP's rule that only temporary structures are allowed. They hold about 50 people a day; in October 2025, 150 to 500 a day arrived and tents were overfull. They close in the monsoon. Agencies selling the trek to foreigners still camp with their own tents and cook.

When is the North ABC trail closed?

Landslides block the road from Narchyang to Hum Khola every monsoon; it reopened in late August in both 2025 and 2026, and the tent hotels reopen with it. Snow can close it in autumn: on 30 October 2025, 72 trekkers were rescued and the base camp was closed until 31 October. No source covers December to February.
