Everest Base Camp permits: Sagarmatha National Park and the Khumbu fee एभरेस्ट बेस क्याम्प अनुमति · 2026

Everest Base Camp needs two permits: Sagarmatha National Park (Rs 3,000 for foreigners, Rs 1,500 for SAARC nationals including Indians, Rs 100 for Nepalis) and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee (Rs 3,000, or Rs 2,000 for SAARC and Chinese visitors; Nepalis do not pay it). That is Rs 6,000 for a foreigner, Rs 3,500 for an Indian and Rs 100 for a Nepali. No TIMS card, and in practice no compulsory guide.

Where to get them

  1. The national park permit: at the national parks counter in the Nepal Tourism Board building, Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu, or at the park gate at Monjo.
  2. The Khumbu fee: at Lukla if you fly in, or Monjo if you walk in, from the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu municipality's counter.
  3. Coming by road through Kharikhola adds the municipality's Rs 50 road-entry fee per passenger.

Who needs it

  • Everest Base Camp, Gokyo, the Three Passes and the Everest View trek all use these two permits and nothing else.
  • Walking in from Jiri, agencies add the Gaurishankar Conservation Area permit (Rs 3,000, SAARC Rs 1,000); that is the agencies' claim, not an official one.
  • Climbing Everest is a different permit altogether — the Department of Tourism's mountaineering royalty — and not covered here.

Cost of the whole trek, by nationality: Everest Base Camp.

What changed, and when

  • 1 Oct 2017The Khumbu fee replaces TIMS in the Everest region.
  • 16 Jul 2024The Khumbu fee becomes Rs 3,000, with Rs 2,000 for SAARC and Chinese visitors.
  • ~Feb 2025A Rs 50 road-entry fee at Kharikhola for people arriving by vehicle.

What the sources disagree on

  • VAT on the park fee: the park's own charter says the fee includes VAT; agency pages add 13% (Rs 3,390).
  • Whether the Khumbu fee still has a surcharge after four weeks, as it did before July 2024.

Common questions

How much is the Everest permit for a Nepali?

Rs 100 for Sagarmatha National Park. Nepali citizens do not pay the Khumbu municipality fee and need no TIMS card.

How much are the Everest Base Camp permits for an Indian?

Rs 3,500: Rs 1,500 for the national park at the SAARC rate and Rs 2,000 for the Khumbu municipality fee.

Do I need a TIMS card or a guide for Everest Base Camp?

No TIMS card: the Khumbu fee replaced it in 2017. A guide is not compulsory in practice — the Khumbu municipality never applied the 2023 rule, and the Kathmandu Post (20 Nov 2025) calls guides mandatory "in all trekking areas except Everest" — though NTB's list still includes Everest.

Do children pay for the Everest permits?

No. Children under 10 enter the national park free, and the Khumbu municipality lets them in free on the basis of their documents.
