Quick answer

The 12 Nepali months in English, in order, are Baisakh, Jestha, Ashar, Shrawan, Bhadra, Ashoj, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun and Chaitra. Baisakh starts in mid-April, and each month runs from the middle of one English month to the middle of the next. In 2083 BS, Ashar has 32 days, Mangsir and Magh 29.

Nepal dates its forms, certificates, contracts and notices in Bikram Sambat (BS). Its months do not line up with January to December, and their lengths change from year to year, so a list of fixed English dates is right for one year at most. This page gives the names and their spellings, the real dates and days of every month in 2083, the new year, the days of the week, and how the fiscal year and a written BS date work.

The 12 Nepali months in English, with their 2083 dates

Each Nepali month begins between the 12th and the 18th of an English month and ends in the next one. The first day of each month moves by no more than a day from year to year: in every year from 2070 to 2083, it fell on one of the two dates shown below.

2083 BS runs from 14 April 2026 to 13 April 2027, 365 days.

Other spellings of the Nepali month names

There is no one official English spelling. Each month has an everyday Nepali name and a formal Sanskrit one, and both are written in English several ways, so Baisakh, Baishakh and Vaishakh are the same month. Any of them is understood. In a CV, a letter or a form, pick one spelling and keep to it.

How many days are in each Nepali month

A Nepali month has 29, 30, 31 or 32 days, and the same month can gain or lose a day from one year to the next. In 2083 BS, Ashar has 32 days; Baisakh, Jestha, Shrawan, Bhadra and Ashoj have 31; Kartik, Poush, Falgun and Chaitra have 30; Mangsir and Magh have 29.

2082 had exactly the same lengths. The two years before it did not:

Why the lengths change, and who sets them

Nepal’s BS months are solar. Each one begins on a sankranti (संक्रान्ति), the day the sun moves from one sign of the zodiac (राशि) into the next. Baisakh begins with Mesh Sankranti, when the sun enters Aries, and Magh with Maghe Sankranti, when it enters Capricorn. The last day of a month is its masanta (मसान्त).

The sun does not cross the twelve signs at an even pace, because the Earth moves fastest in early January, when it is nearest the sun, and slowest in early July. So the sun spends longest in the signs of the Nepali summer, which is why Jestha, Ashar and Shrawan reach 31 or 32 days, and least in those of winter, when Mangsir, Poush or Magh can be 29.

The crossing can happen at any hour, but a month is counted in whole days. As the time of the crossing shifts from year to year, a month can gain or lose a day.

The official calendar is settled by the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Bikas Samiti (नेपाल पञ्चाङ्ग निर्णायक विकास समिति), a government committee under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, whose current formation order dates from 2077 BS. It approves the almanacs (पञ्चाङ्ग) and wall calendars published each year and decides the dates of festivals and tithis. Calendars printed without its approval can face action.

Public holidays are a separate list, which the Ministry of Home Affairs publishes in the Nepal Rajpatra. The list for 2083 was published on 18 Falgun 2082 (2 March 2026), and the Nepali calendar marks each holiday on it.

Month lengths for years not yet published are projections, and converters can disagree about them by a day. Our converter marks every date from 2084 BS onward as provisional.

Nepali new year: when 1 Baisakh falls

The Nepali new year (नयाँ वर्ष) is 1 Baisakh, the day of Mesh Sankranti. It falls on 13 or 14 April. 2083 BS began on Tuesday 14 April 2026, and 2084 BS begins on Wednesday 14 April 2027.

Because the year starts in April, one BS year covers parts of two AD years. 1 January 2027 is 17 Poush 2083.

Days of the week in Nepali

The Nepali week runs from Sunday to Saturday, the same as the English one. Every name ends in बार (bar), which means “day”, and calendars often shorten the names to the first part: आइत, सोम, मङ्गल and so on.

The fiscal year and the school year

Nepal’s fiscal year (आर्थिक वर्ष) runs from 1 Shrawan to the last day of Asar the following year. That is how the Financial Procedures and Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2076 defines it, and it is why a fiscal year is written with two years, such as 2083/84. In AD it starts in mid-July.

The school year follows the BS year. Under the Education Regulations, 2059, the academic session begins on 1 Baisakh and ends with Chaitra. For 2083 the government started it on 15 Baisakh (28 April 2026), and some municipalities set their own dates.

How to write a Nepali (BS) date

Nepal writes the year first, then the month, then the day. The same day, 29 October 2026, can be written:

  • 2083/07/12 or 2083-07-12, with Kartik written as month 07.
  • २०८३/०७/१२ or २०८३।०७।१२ in Nepali numerals. Official papers also use the danda (।): the Act above was certified on २०७६।०६।२४.
  • 2083 Kartik 12 or 12 Kartik 2083 in words, and in Nepali २०८३ कार्तिक १२ गते, where गते marks the day of the month.
  • B.S. or वि.सं. after the date, so that nobody takes it for AD: 2083/07/12 B.S.
  • मसान्त (masanta) for the last day of a month, whatever its number. Notices use it because the number changes: the end of Asar was Asar 31 in 2081 and Asar 32 in 2083.

Common questions

Which Nepali month has 32 days?

In 2083 BS only Ashar has 32 days, from 15 June to 16 July 2026. In other years Jestha or Shrawan can have 32 instead, or both: in 2081 Jestha and Shrawan had 32 and Ashar 31. No other month has had 32 days since 2070 BS.

Which Nepali months have 29 days?

In 2083 BS, Mangsir and Magh have 29 days. The 29-day months always fall in winter, between Kartik and Falgun, but which ones changes: in 2081 they were Poush and Falgun.

How many days are there in a Nepali year?

365 or 366. 2082 and 2083 BS each have 365 days, and 2081 had 366. There is no leap day as in the English calendar: the total is whatever the twelve months add up to that year.

When is Nepali New Year 2084?

1 Baisakh 2084 is Wednesday 14 April 2027. The year 2083 ends the day before, on 30 Chaitra, 13 April 2027.

Is the Nepali calendar solar or lunar?

Its months and dates are solar: each month starts when the sun enters a new sign of the zodiac. Many festivals, such as Dashain and Tihar, follow the lunar day (tithi), which is why their BS dates move from year to year.

Which English month is Baisakh?

Baisakh runs from mid-April to mid-May. In 2083 BS it is 14 April to 14 May 2026, 31 days. It is the first month of the Nepali year.
