Backend Engineer

We're looking for a mid-level Backend Developer with strong backend expertise in Django and Node.js, hands-on GIS/geospatial experience, and a proven ability to mentor junior developers. You'll write production code, make architectural decisions, and guide a small team toward delivery.

Qualification and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related technical discipline.

3-4 years of professional software development experience.

Job Description

Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Django (Python) and Node.js (JavaScript/TypeScript).

Build and optimize geospatial APIs and services using tools such as PostGIS, GeoDjango, GeoServer, Leaflet, Mapbox GL, or OpenLayers.

Design and manage spatial databases, including writing and optimizing complex spatial queries.

Architect scalable, secure, and maintainable RESTful/GraphQL APIs for map-based applications.

Integrate third-party mapping and location services (Google Maps, Mapbox, ArcGIS, OSM, etc.).

Collaborate with front-end developers, GIS analysts, and product managers to deliver map centric features.

Lead, mentor, and supervise junior developers conduct code reviews, guide technical decisions, and support their growth.

Own task delegation, and technical documentation for your team's deliverables.

Ensure code quality through testing, CI/CD practices, and adherence to best practices.

Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks in spatial data processing and rendering.

Stay current with GIS technologies, spatial algorithms, and industry standards

Required Skills

Strong proficiency in Python/Django and Node.js/Express.

Familiarity with GIS concepts: coordinate systems, projections, spatial indexing, geometry types (points, lines, polygons).

Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL/PostGIS or similar spatial databases.

Familiarity with mapping libraries/frameworks: Leaflet, Mapbox GL JS, OpenLayers, or ArcGIS API.

Familiarity with GeoServer, GeoDjango, QGIS, or similar GIS tools.

Strong understanding of RESTful API design and microservices architecture.

Experience with version control (Git) and CI/CD pipelines.

Proven experience supervising, mentoring, or leading a team of junior developers.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work with large-scale spatial datasets.

Excellent communication skills able to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
